Christine
Waterson is one of our wonderful digital champions from Grantown
on Spey. She shares her experiences of helping other people to get online.

I was
reluctantly dragged kicking and screaming into the age of information technology so I fully appreciate that people of my generation find it difficult
to comprehend how amazing it is, particularly the iPad which really is the best
thing since sliced bread and does everything, but make the tea and do the
ironing!

I was
more than happy to help get these citizens online and learnt a lot
myself. As a qualified IT Trainer in my
working life, it felt good to share my expertise and see inexperienced users
grow in confidence.

The iPad
and Tablet sessions have now become a 'must' on Monday mornings. Newcomers are welcomed by the regulars who eagerly
pass on their knowledge. Undoubtedly
this opportunity has made a difference to the lives of quite a few residents in
this part of the world, not only by revealing the many wonders of the worldwide
web, but also putting people in touch and making new friends.

There is
always a great deal of banter and a lot of laughs, particularly as Siri
struggles to recognise the Scottish accent! Citizens (mostly senior) online is certainly thriving in the Highlands
and we now look forward to running sessions for laptop users which we hope will
be equally successful.

Q1 – I am getting a lot of emails at the moment from companies wanting to help with debts –though I do not have any! How do they get my details and how do I stop them?

A1 – Your email address is no more a secret than your house address and post code is – anyone can get the information, but knowing a Mr Green lives in Picket Cottage does not tell you anything about him or his life. Just after Christmas you should expect emails advising of help with debt, weight loss etc .

The senders go for what is in the news as worrying us the most. You cannot stop them, but best to try and reduce them by putting in the junk file as you receive them. Have a look through your junk mail as well – you will soon see their pattern. Please ensure you never open any attachment though – no matter how much they say the voucher is worth!

Q2 I am trying to help my friend get more use out of their internet – they now shop and use email - any suggestions of anything else we can try?

A2 Something new for you to try is joining your local library, and understanding what they have on offer online. I have been using their e-books service for a while, and think it is great – but recently I have started using their e-magazine service, where you can download, for free, copies of your favourite reads. Ask at your local library for more information.

Q3 I have been with my internet provider for 5 years, with no problems- but recently I have been taking more note of the various advertised prices from both their competitors, and my own supplier as well! Is changing supplier a lot of trouble?

A3 The broadband market is full of super deals, especially if you include your phone line as part of the package. I have recently changed from paying over £40 per month for both, to just paying line rental and getting the broadband for free!

If you do your research, and gather your info well, it should be no hassle. The old and new supplier should agree a date to handover, and you get your new box to connect. Remember you will need to connect all your devices to the new broadband, and there is a good chance you will lose all your emails if your old supplier gave you an email address for free.

Now might be the time to set up a new email address that is internet based e.g. Hotmail – so you do not get the same hassle the next time you swap.
I am thinking of doing some shopping online, but am nervous of how to go about it. Any tips?

A1 – Your first port of call needs to be some safety advice – try getsafeonline.org – there are a load of important facts there for you to study. Once you are confident on the safety aspects, start out small, and get used to the processes involved.

Most reputable companies will want you to set up an account with them, and you will need to register payment methods and contact methods. Use the reviews provided, and do your own research on the goods/services, especially if new to you.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-bidi-font-family: "Franklin Gothic Book"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-GB; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-font-kerning: 12.0pt;">
There is no point googleing BHS, but be aware that a polished, all singing web site could be run by one man in his attic, but would cover London, Paris & Peckham! Search for reviews, the more the better!

Q2 I am getting frustrated with delivery companies! As I work office hours, I am never home when items I have ordered online are delivered. How can I work around this?

A2 This is an age old problem for shopping online- yes, you can order a brand new telly from the warmth of your bed, on a cold wet Sunday night, but that is no use if you are out fixing Mrs Williams’s dodgy central heating for the rest of the week!

The reality is, that out here in the wilds of Wales, a lot of delivery firms only come up once a week, if that. So if you are not in for white van man on Monday, his next available delivery date is probably next Monday.

Look for alternative answers – a lot of retailers offer delivery to alternative addresses, or even local pick up points. Check if you can give special instructions for delivery- such as your mobile number for them to call you when they are in the area-after all, you are the customer.

Q3 I have gone a bit crazy on my computer in the last few weeks, having insured my car (saved £150), insured the house (£200 less) and even changed my internet provider. I did both the insurance deals through a cashback web site my friend recommended –was that wise?

A3 Congratulations, now you are making your computer pay its way! Cashback sites earn commission from companies for bringing in business – and they offer you a share of the commission in return for using them.

There are a lot of similar sites, and most give you access to you ‘commission’ after a set time has passed, usually after they have received their share. Remember to research the site, as there are a few rogue ones out there, and try to cash in your money as soon as you are allowed to do so.

I have heard of people making great savings through using these sites, but be warned, they can be addictive! I would be very weary of buying a product from a specific supplier, based purely on the size of the cashback. As with all ‘offers’, check the fine print.

For further information or to book a place on a course in Gwynedd, please contact:

Daniel Richards, Get IT Together – Gwynedd, Project Coordinator
Email: daniel.richards@citizensonline.org.uk
Telephone: 07854 690 529

Get IT Together in Gwynedd is supported by BT’s Connected Society programme, BT’s commitment to help people right around the world gain the skills and confidence they need to join the online community and Communities 2.0, Gwynedd Council, Cartrefi Cymunedol Gwynedd.

So, your loved ones have taken the numerous hints you have been given, and have purchased you a shiny new tablet for Christmas, what do you actually do with it?

Once you switch it on, and have a play with it, you need to immediately change two settings, in order to stop you throwing the confounded object out of the nearest window!

For Apple products, tap the settings icon (picture of a cog), tap Display & Brightness, and adjust the screen brightness to a comfortable setting. Then select the General setting, and scroll the screen down until you see the Auto-Lock feature. Tap this to amend to, say 5 minutes.

For Android devices, the Setting icon is usually a square icon, with three sliding switches indicated inside. Tap this icon, and select display – and then select both brightness and Sleep in order to adjust.

As tablets are marketed as having impressive battery life, it is logical that they leave the factory with settings to give the optimum battery life – so the screen brightness is set low, and the devices are set to go into standby after 2 mins of inactivity – which can be frustrating as you just put it down for a second to grab another mince pie!

Now, you have played about with it – got it linked to your house broadband (remember that those passwords are case- sensitive), you are now keen to join the world of Apps!

To start downloading Apps, you first of all need to register with the App Store for Apple, or Playstore for android devices.

The Playstore is actually Google Playstore for Android, so to sign in to the Playstore, you need to sign in with your gmail address as your username, and the password for your gmail as your password. If you do not have a gmail email address, you will need to set one up.

For the Apple Store, you need to set up an Apple ID, by going to the App store, selecting a free app, and the device will ask for your Apple ID – SELECT Create an Apple ID, follow the on screen instructions . When you're asked for payment information, choose None as the payment type.

You are now ready to get some Apps =you can flick through those selected, or search by name using the search box provided (look for the magnifying glass symbol).

Here is a selection of useful Apps for you to try:

BBCi player – To catch up with all the shows you miss whilst sleeping off the turkey, also load all the other channels, such as 4OD, etc.

Boat Watch – This App utilizes the GPS connection on your tablet to show you what boats are out at sea, anywhere in the world.

You could also load Flightradar24 Free, which you hold it up to the sky and it tells you what all the airplanes you can see are, where they are going, how high, how fast, the pilot’s name and what’s in the sandwiches (well nearly).

Similar apps are available to show you the name of the stars, or even the location on the International Space Station up above (ISS Spotter).

Spotify and Shazam are two popular Apps for music lovers.

7 minute Workout is a good App for getting rid of the overindulgence on the Yule log, and there are a number of exercise Apps out there.

The most popular Apps being loaded at present are YouTube – well worth getting to know, whether you search for videos of cyclists riding flat out down a mountain in Ffestiniog, or the 1979 Penrhyndeudraeth Carnival which is a blast from the past, even if just to be amazed at the cars people used to drive!

Only after you have explored some of the above Apps should you allow yourself to be drawn into the strangely addictive Apps such as Candy Crush Saga (allowing grandma to have a go at this may ensure the sherry bottle gets some peace though). Logos quiz starts off as a casual quiz but will have all the family racking their brains.

All the above Apps are just a taster for you to get a feel for your device, and start to search for more Apps. There are news Apps (Daily Post is a nice one), game Apps, shopping Apps – there are no limits to what is out there!

Do remember that those of you with an Android tablet need to consider looking for an Antivirus , I advise looking at free ones such as AVG, as recent reports say they are just as good as paid for ones.

Also remember that your tablet is able to surf the Web, so have a go at finding new Web sites. Gwynedd Council have just updated their Web page, and not only can you check for the next refuse collection to take all you Christmas wrapping paper away, you could also use their site to link to web cameras that allow you to see the weather on top of Snowdon, or how the surf looks on Hells Mouth – all part of your get fit campaign while you have a few days off, well, maybe next year!

Finally, for the jokers amongst you, there is an app called Crack My Screen, that gives an image to look as if you have already broken your new toy – the look on the faces of those who have given you the tablet will be priceless – just what Christmas is for!

For further information or to book a place on a course in Gwynedd, contact:

Daniel Richards, Get IT Together – Gwynedd, Project Coordinator

Email: daniel.richards@citizensonline.org.uk

Telephone: 07854 690 529

Get IT Together in Gwynedd is supported by BT’s Connected Society programme, BT’s commitment to help people right around the world gain the skills and confidence they need to join the online community and Communities 2.0, Gwynedd Council, Cartrefi Cymunedol Gwynedd.

</xml><![endif]--><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif";">In Bristol, BT and Bristol City Council and Citizens Online are working together to run the Get IT Together Programme, a community development approach to digital inclusion.

The Get It Together project in Bristol aims to give senior citizens and people with a disability the skills to get online. 11 free courses happen each week in libraries, community centres and day centres in Bristol.

A recent volunteers’ Best Practice Day highlighted some insights on what not to presume with new learners. Project co-ordinator Kerry outlines 5 of the most common presumptions below:

1. That people know what ‘dot’ means. “Go to w w w dot bbc…” Explaining it’s a full stop is essential before getting started on the internet.

2. That learners will know when they type on a computer that it will automatically write in lowercase on the screen (even though it’s printed in capitals on the keyboard).

3. That learners know a mouse only works on a surface. A mouse looks a bit like a remote control – that you point at a screen…

4. That people will automatically associate symbols they see in real life with ones on a web page. For example a triangle for play or the two bars for pause can be lost in the busy graphics of a webpage. Web designers, if you want this new audience to get your site quickly and easily, then include ‘play’ or ‘pause’ text please. Also if the options only appear when you roll over them can you let us know with a bit of text at the side?

5. That anyone can master double clicking with practice. Wrong. Some people cannot click that quickly, ever. I’m hopeful that with tablets it may become an obsolete function. Until then we’re a fan of the click-once-then-press-enter alternative.

To find out more about the project go to http://bristol-getittogether.btck.co.uk/

Get IT Together in Bristol is supported by BT’s Connected Society programme, BT’s commitment to help people right around the world gain the skills and confidence they need to join the online community and Bristol City Council.

deliver the Get IT Together Programme, a community development approach to
digital inclusion, helping people across the area to benefit from gaining on
line skills.

A team of six writers
based at Lairg Learning Centre have launched their very own blog, with support
from Get IT Together - NW Sutherland. The writers have been attending basic IT sessions
to find out how to share their work online. Although most of the learners attending
the sessions use a computer, none of them had tried out blogging.

The group created a
very basic site using the online site, blogger – because it most resembles the
majority of basic word-processing packages- and learners share access and admin
rights to the blog. The central idea, as well as reaching a wider online
audience, is that in winter months, when driving becomes a challenge in bad
weather, the writers can still share their work together and provide feedback.

Project Coordinator,
Irene Warner-Mackintosh, commented: “We are thrilled to be helping these
writers to get online and share their creative work with the wider public.”

The writer’s blog

As part of Our Digital Zone the team offered a session at Kinmylies Church in Inverness called ‘Guerilla Knitting’, hoping to draw in people with a passion for crafting and teach them about websites such as Ravelry and Etsy. To this end, Project Coordinator Irene Warner-Mackintosh took a call from Lorna, who, when booking her place, stated that she hated the internet and computers, but knew she had to give it a go because she loved knitting. This was her reason for going online for the first time and she was interested to see what the internet had to offer. Lorna arrived at the session with a bag of beautiful knitted items- felted bags, gorgeous gloves and glamorous hats. She was partnered with digital champion Lizi Sutherland who showed her how to get online and use the internet effectively. Lorna was very interested as she wants to start a business to sell her handmade products online. By the end of the session Lorna was enthused. To find out more about setting up her business she will be visiting the HIE Digital Team for social media support, and Business Gateway for business advice. Sometimes you meet someone who you know full well has so much to give to a prospective employer that you would like to talk to them and explain why they should take this person on, Callum is one of those people.

Callum joined Get Caerphilly Online as a volunteer in December 2012 just in time for the launch of our Digital Fridays sessions in Caerphilly libraries. As someone who was poached from “out of county” Callum’s best location was Blackwood due to a direct bus link from his home. With excellent IT skills Callum patiently supported everyone with their digital needs who come into our busiest Digital Fridays location.

As Callum got used to other members of the team he expressed an interest in taking on additional volunteer hours in an administrative capacity to develop his experience of the workplace. Luckily we were able to host him at our (Wales Co-operative Centre) office in Abercynon, just a short train journey up from his home. Prompt with excellent communication, Callum was always keen to come in and help out and learn. He blended well into the team but thinking about it I’m unsure whether he ever made a cup of tea hmmmm and did everything that was asked of him and more, trying out different designs and bringing new ideas to the table.

It was clear that if he could get interviews and be himself, which is hard for most people in interview he would soon get that break. He never gave in and after only 8 months with us he landed his first permanent job. While sad to see any volunteer leave that is exactly why we do it. Volunteering is about giving someone a worthwhile experience and one that they get something from whether that is experience, the pleasure of helping others or socialising. People like Callum deserve success; doing all they can to get on, persevering until they achieve that break.

It is also nice to keep in touch and check how things are going, this is what Callum had to say: “I'm very grateful for the voluntary opportunity I had with GCO which led to additional volunteering in the office of their partner organisation Communities 2.0. Without it I wouldn't be working in the field I've been trying to get a job in for well over a year so a huge thank you to the GCO team and to Matt for allowing me to work in the office. It was great working with everyone as they are all so friendly and I could be myself around them which I think is really important when participating in a project such as this. I will miss you all and I hope you help many more people to get online and discover the benefits and importance of technology in our ever-changing world!”

Blog post by Matthew Lloyd, Communities 2.0 ICT Broker for Caerphilly

Get IT Together - Caerphilly is a partnership between Citizens Online; BT, through their Connected Society programme; Caerphilly Council, Communities 2.0 and Get Caerphilly Online (part of Communities 2.0).Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08159875272721828646noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-964563644663595361.post-52343349752201244652013-10-03T13:44:00.000-07:002013-10-03T13:54:39.564-07:00Four million households in the UK are still not connected to the internet, according to the Office for National Statistics<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-GB;"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-GB;">In Bristol, BT and

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif"; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif"; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;">As part of the Get IT Together – Bristol
project, volunteers run 11 free beginners’ computer courses throughout Bristol
each week. In April 2013, Kevin O’Malley, Manager of the Future City team at
Bristol City Council spoke <span style="color: black; font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif";">at the bi-annual Bristol Volunteers
Thank you and Best Practice Day about the importance of volunteering. The
transcript of that talk follows.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif";"> <span style="color: black; font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif";">“Hi, I’m Kevin O’Malley and my work involves helping Bristol to be
at the forefront of digital inclusion, highlighting and addressing the barriers
people have to getting online.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif";">There are three main barriers to getting online; equipment,
connectivity and skills.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif";">Volunteers at the Citizens Online computer courses play a vital
role in addressing this issue of skills and that’s why I’ve come here today to
say thank you to you all for the time and enthusiasm you are putting into
helping people get online.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif";">With welfare reforms coming in and people having to get online to
access essential services it is becoming a bit problem for some people who
don’t have the skills, as well as the other barriers mentioned.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif";">Some people don’t have the connectivity and there are lots of
reasons for that; very expensive or having to sign up to long term
contracts.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif";">Maybe they don’t have the kit, getting the kit without the
knowledge of what to buy or get something that’s useful to you, is very
difficult.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif";">Having the computer skills is the thing that I think is most
valuable, giving the people the skills and the confidence, without that people
are going to become more and more disadvantaged.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif";">Organisations like government and city councils move towards more
digital services as it’s cheaper to relate to people online, so the obligation
is for people to be able communicate more in that way. Businesses have been
doing it for a long time, if you want to buy a ticket to go on Easy Jet or Ryan
Air you need a digital connection.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif";">My fear is we are already going to find people that are
disadvantaged in lots of different ways, more disadvantaged by not having the
skills to get online, and this is a fantastic program that is really making a
difference. Nationally this is one of the most effective, and highly respected,
programs of this kind and I know we couldn’t have done it here in Bristol
without you guys delivering it.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif";">I suppose the thing for me is getting down to the human stories and
the differences this makes to people’s lives, just to be able to think there
are hundreds of people now in the city today who are able to Skype their
relatives abroad because of the work that you guys do, and I just wanted to say
thanks very much, it’s really important and valuable stuff.”

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif"; mso-themecolor: text1;">

Both conferences have offered
interesting insights, and differing opinions, on the subject of Digital
Inclusion.

Firstly, here are some of figures highlighting the extent of
digitally exclusion in this Country:

1.2 million young people

1.5 million 25-50 year olds

2.5 million late middle age people

10.6 million have never used the internet

2.6 million have no access to broadband

So what’s being done about it?

DWP
have been taking to Twitter, and turning their job centres into “Apple-like
stores”, to give people more freedom digitally and give more up to date info on
smartphones and tablets. This has proven successful to a degree, but the elderly
and disabled are struggle to benefit from it as they don’t have the ability to
get to job centres, or the skills to use social media.

Helen Goodman MP, shadow minister
for media, believes that Government should be spending more money on Digital
inclusion. Things that she suggests include; opening more ‘drop in centres’,
getting large corporations to provide ICT kit, giving local authorities more
resources and giving more power to Ofcom to stop overpriced broadband
bundles.

These are steps in the right direction, but not a complete solution. As Helen
Milner from UK Online Centres said,
“Digital Inclusion is all about the people”. Not enough is being done to engage
with the really hard to get to people. Digital Inclusion is more than just
giving people access to online benefits, it’s about tackling problems that the
excluded face on a day to day basis, such as social isolation.

A recent NHS report says that being lonely has the same impact on your health
as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.

Citizens Online and Bristol City Council are working with the community to
give people the confidence as well as the skills, kit and the connectivity they
need to make social connections digitally, as well as buy products or access
government service online. For more information visit http://bristol-getittogether.btck.co.uk/
This week I was asked about pie charts, not perhaps
something you are asked every day, but a common enough question for an analyst
and one you need to have a ready opinion on if you’re going to count yourself
as a data professional. A tweet
had started the debate and everyone likes to share their views so here are my
musings.

Over the years, I’ve been a supporter of the “no pie charts”
campaign in the past but more recently I’m mellowing. I’ve seen 3D pie charts (still a
no-no for me), pie charts with more pieces of pie than you could possibly count,
pie charts that don’t start at zero (12 o’clock) and pie charts with no legend
or title. All of these still get my goat somewhat. However, I still use pie
charts and here’s why. Everyone knows what they are, the fact that they are now
on every food packaging and label you find means people are used to seeing them
and used to reading them. Moreover, they do show at a glance the “biggest”
slice of the pie. Even a small child can say which bit of pie they’d rather eat,
so it makes it easy to see the largest proportion.

More important, is the fact
that you can also combine slices of the pie visually and see what proportion
you get, varying the categories to include. In the “Bad example” (pie chart) you can easily see that organic
searching, email marketing and social media takes up more than ¾ of the pie. It’s
a rough and ready reckoner for people who just want to combine different parts
of the data without having to read axis with small printed labels. Compare this
with the “recommended graph” (bar chart). It’s not so easy to combine the 3 categories.
Here you have to add up in your head 48%, 19% and 17% - anyone? (No cheating
with a calculator!).

My husband (also an
analyst) came up with a different anti-pie chart argument that I hadn’t heard
before. Edward Tufte’s Ink to data ratio.
This states that “A large share of ink on a graphic should present
data-information, the ink changing as the data change”. This isn’t a campaign
to save printer ink. The Non-Data-Ink is the ink that does not transport
the information but it is used for scales, labels and edges etc. Pie charts don’t
fare well here either as there’s lots of non data-ink around a pie chart.

My last hope to save the
humble pie chart, is to say they’re simple to create. Excel does them
for you with the push of a button. This may not initially be seen as a
positive, but as a supporter of life-long learning I know that there are people
out there who run away, screaming at the thought of numbers, graphs and charts.
For the data-phobic, creating a pie chart may be a big step and the first they’ve
taken to turning raw data into some visual analysis. It may not always be
pretty, but it is a start. So there you have it, I’m not going to stop using
pie charts, but I’m not going to start recommending them either. Sitting on the
fence perhaps, but eating a large slice of pie.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The views on this blog are the views of the author, Emily Harper, and not necessarily the views of Citizens Online.

hockey playing teenage years, whose phone calls and Christmas cards had dried
up, a neighbour suggested looking her up on the computer.

Having her proper name and latest address, I tapped them
into Google and to my amazement up came an obituary notice in the Evening
Herald.

Some Cornish Times readers will recall Kate, as her father
Canon Jack Parsons was a popular vicar of St Martin’s back in the 1950s.

Having played cricket for Warwickshire in his youth he was friendly
with the then Bishop of Truro, Joey Hunkin, and thought it his duty to spend
time every Thursday morning in the cattle market where he was considered ‘a
proper chap’ and I suppose acted as unofficial chaplain for the countryside.

Some will remember he had much publicity for turning his
army sword into a ploughshare and I fancy he went to Bolitho farm and John Moon
taught him to plough a furrow.

Always carrying a rucksack on his back he bought fresh
vegetables from the growers in the market and probably checked with butcher
Dennis to know whose bullock he was buying that day for the evening rib of beef
he would later be buying. Traceability
of the highest order and a proper spoken relationship between producer, middle
man and consumer – no bureaucracy or reams of paperwork for DEFRA and Health
and Safety and Liskeard had prestige as a market town where livestock was sold
and bought, and town and country met to mutual benefit.

Times change and several days into this darkest of winters
were spent in good company in the church rooms where Sheri Sturgess had
organised a wonderful course for elderly computer users who needed help.

Some had no machine at home and needed introduction, other
brought laptops but had no idea about potential use, and books written on the
subject are written by high-tech experts in their own peculiar language.

Being completely computer illiterate, having done farm
accounts when pen and paper sufficed and having no desire to do business with a
machine, I had a sudden hunger to find the mass of information available on
Google, so bought myself an iPad.

These mobile tablets are the future as they can be used in
the armchair, in bed or taken on holiday. Used as a camera, would you believe
it you can turn your landscape into a jigsaw puzzle of as many pieces as you
like and amuse yourself with that, send emails to friends and grandchildren and
many of my Apps concern the racing industry.

David Hockney, the famous artist, uses his to create
eye-wateringly expensive artwork and I do art hesitantly, and that’s the great
thing about the church classes. When we get stuck or don’t have an eight-year-old
in the house, the tutor from Citizens Online called Jay Chapman, was a saint.
Helpful, interested, patient and encouraging, he was a master of his job. And
with a grant from BT to the church to get broadband for a year thought is that
it may be possible to start a drop-in cafe for those of us who forget what to
do next or need advice.

If you are in this situation just contact the church office
or Sheri Sturgess and if you are able, email sheri.sturgess@googlemail.com

Another gem of information while on this subject – a friend
told me that her daughter has just produced a book, I had sight of it and
promptly ordered a copy from mum.

Written by Angela McConnel it is called Grandma got an iPad,
published by Happy Lappy of Lulworth.

Ryan Bevan, our Get IT Together
Project Co-ordinator is training 35 young volunteers to help deliver digital
inclusion in RCT. Working with volunteers presents a variety of challenges, and
the additional element of introducing younger volunteers introduces another
range of issues including recruitment, training and management. Ryan has built
in additional training and support for these young volunteers and encourages
shadowing and mentoring to enable them to become confident enough to deliver
sessions.

Ryan has found that after
registering an initial interest in volunteers and undergoing training, some
were not reliable and were not committing to the delivery sessions as they had
agreed. To overcome this, he now holds a volunteer briefing each week. This allows
new volunteers to find out about the project and the benefits of being
involved. Volunteers then get to shadow Ryan or an experienced volunteer before
committing to the project. This enables volunteers to make better choices and
Ryan to ensure his delivery team are reliable and committed.

Ryan’s link with the Jobcentre
Plus has been a positive partnership for his project. The Jobcentre are
signposting both volunteers and learners to Ryan. He is making the most of
this, by running regular sessions 2 days each week for learners and holding training
sessions for new volunteers.

Ryan has had a steady stream of
volunteers for his project, and the local college has offered Welsh Bacc students
as well. However, the timetabling and restrictions that the college operate
under, means that Ryan has had to wait to the start of term to co-ordinate
dates that suit both students and his learners.

One of the early successes for
the project is a volunteer finding employment. Ashley had completed the training
with Ryan and had helped out at several sessions, whilst applying for jobs. He’s
now been offered a job and has started working. Part of the project’s aims is
to help improve employability skills for young volunteers and helping a
volunteer into employment is a great achievement.

As knowledge of the project
spreads, Ryan is being contacted by libraries, sheltered housing schemes and
other community organisations to arrange training sessions. He plans to use his
volunteers to take over session delivery so he can continue to build more
partnerships. One of the newer partnerships Ryan is going to work with is Communities
First. They are agreeing their cluster delivery plans at the moment and Ryan is
linking in to their over 50s basic IT sessions.

Ryan works closely with the other
Get IT Together projects across Wales and as part of a joint Adult Learners
Week campaign, he is running IT drop in sessions in Tonyrefail this week.

One of those kind of inspiring, 'aaah, so this is what life's for' kind of days. A brilliant day.

It didn't start well. It was raining. I had to clean out the car before I left (eeeeurgh) and somehow I seemed to have an incomprehensible amount of cabling to take with me. Though that's an ongoing issue. A personal battle, if you will.

Anyway... Today I was asked to be part of a Creative Writing Conference, as part of Adult Learning week, by our enthusiastic Adult Learning Coordinator. My job was to enthuse folk about the world of blogging as a means of providing a public, creative space, where folk will actually read your work. As a platform for budding writers to share their stories, poems or Dr. Who passions.

In a room of 25, only one person had ever read a blog, never mind thought of writing one themselves. We rushed through a myriad hotpotch of blogs I follow- from Eurovision to crofting, from Dr Who to Colonel Hadfield- as I tried to explain it's passion and commitment that drives a blog forward. That you write about something you care about. We looked at blogging (not quite mainstream) writers, such as Caroline von Schmalensee to Anna Punch.

I talked, passionately, about the Internet as a force for good. As an exciting thing to be part of, as somewhere you can find folk who share your interests. And where you can write, write, write- and be read.

And then we came to microblogging, and to Twitter in particular. I distributed, in beautiful, colour-printed paper form, the latest offerings from the Guardian Twitter Fiction collection, where established authors have been asked to write a short story in 140 characters or less. I talked about Twitter as a public forum, a connecting space- and tasked our creative bunch, each one, to write their own Twitter Fiction.

I can't tell you how amazed and excited I was by their work.

As the day progressed, we indulged in all manners of other creative writing - screenwriting with highly acclaimed local actors (*cough*), poetry writing and a group song. It was brilliant. We had cake. There was a lot of laughing.

But, selfishly, my absolutely favourite bit of the day was being able to publish some fantastic pieces of writing by hitherto unpublished, wonderful folk.

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 150%;">Carla
Lockhart, the Council Mayor and Margarita O Donnell, from Loughshore Access
Project, presented seven members of Maghery Diamond Club with certificates for
participating in a free IPAD for beginners course and twelve members from
Maghery youth club for their invaluable contribution throughout the six weeks.
Relationships were really strengthened throughout this intergenerational
project and great fun and laughter was had by all.

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 150%;">This course was facilitated
through BT Connected Communities as part of the Get IT Together programme, in
partnership with the UK charity, Citizens Online. They are investing
resources to help increase public access to the internet through providing fun
informal computer sessions to help build confidence and skills for new users
and job seekers. In Northern Ireland we have a fantastic fibre broadband
infrastructure and we want to ensure that as many people as possible benefit
from that.

the way people use the internet. They will be contacted over a two year
period to ask them about their internet usage, at 3 months, 6 months, 1 year and
2 years after they’ve complete the training. The survey takes
approximately 10 minutes to complete. The results will be used to measure the
success of the training and provide a better understanding of the way people
use the internet and the barriers preventing it’s use.

Money Advice, Digital Inclusion and Pink BootsThe following post was penned by the acers Kim Tewnion - a new member of our digital inclusion team in the far north, and a highly experienced money advice worker. She also has cool boots.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Excited as I am to be working with Irene and the Get IT together project, it has taken me about eight weeks to pull this single guest post together, and so I think the blogosphere is safe from my musings for now. <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">I might have considered keeping a Vlog, if the word wasn’t so ugly, but as this is to be my contribution to the internet for 2013, please excuse the indulgent length of this post.

My involvement in the digital inclusion project is driven by my day job as a Money Adviser. Employed by the Citizens Advice Bureau, I am specifically tasked with empowering people to‘make the most of their money.’ In my role I spend time with clients of all ages and backgrounds, helping them make decisions about their finances – be that where they can cut their budget, highlighting ways of increasing income, talking about issues around borrowing money, investing or pensions. Through these meetings I have seen just the extent to which those who are not online are missing out. You cannot make the most of your money without getting digital.

Yearly trawls around comparison websites for cheaper insurance, breakdown cover or phone packages are not the most exciting aspects of modern life. But, when I see the higher insurance costs -for instance - shouldered by clients who have been unable to use these online tools, it’s clear those 15 minutes were well spent. This is just one example of where the digitally excluded are losing out financially. Cutting shopping costs, reducing the costs of utility bills, the higher return on internet savings accounts and accessing expert advice at the click of a button from websites like the Money Advice Service or Money Saving Expert are just some of the reasons that I am pushing my clients towards getting online.

Unfortunately, it is not just the increased opportunities to cut household bills that brought us into partnership with Get IT together. In the last three months we have seen an increase in the amount of people receiving sanctions on their Jobseekers Allowance payments. In the most part these have been because clients have failed to undertake actions outlined in their job seeking plan. Tasks such as checking named job search websites, or applying for certain positions on the government’s shiny new Universal Jobsmatch.

Some of these clients have only £57 per week to live on. Once they have paid for food, heating, water and the essential travel expenses incurred when attending interviews, there is not enough left for a phone line and broadband package, even if they already own a computer or smartphone (and most don’t.) Thus they must find a friend or family member to help them get online, or use a computer at the local library. For someone who is not familiar with the internet, this is often too little computer time to get them up to the stage where they can complete the specific tasks outlined in their jobseekers agreement. Sanctions occur; up to three years of benefit can be sanctioned for repeated failures.

Compounding this misery, many people who have been sick for a long time are being found ‘fit to work,’ via the controversial Work Capability Assessment that guards access to sickness benefits. These clients have not been in the labour market for years, and many will never even have used a computer, yet if they don’t get up to speed with how to set up an email account, create a digital CV, master web browsers, search engines, menus and hyperlinks, they shall find themselves in complete hardship before long. All this before we even get to the ‘digital by default’ Universal Credit that asks for all claimants to make online claims by October of this year.

The partnership between CAB and Get IT Together is so important, for some of our vulnerable clients it will make the difference between them being able to eat and heat their homes, or them not being able to do so. We are grateful for the resources, funding and support that Get IT together is providing to enable us to start digitally including our clients, and for Irene’s enthusiasm driving this partnership – without which we would be unable to provide the practical help that our clients need. And, although the motivation for many of our client group to get online will be the big threatening stick of absolute poverty, I hope that I can coax them with some carrots too. Like reading the newspaper for free online, looking up long lost school friends on Facebook, getting that hard-to-find item on eBay and Googling your medical symptoms so you can tell your GP exactly what’s wrong with you. (I know that medical professionals especially like the last one.)

It's Spring Online Week and Citizens Online's Get IT Together programme are running events all week to help people get online.

One example is our Bristol project who are out at the Cinema encouraging people to try out their ipads this week.

Spring Online - iPad Surfing in the Cinema! - Bristol

On Thursday the 25th April, Kerry and her Bristol volunteers are hitting the Odeon before the Silver screening of 'Quartet'. They will be in the lobby offering those going to see the film the chance to use an iPad and see some of the useful features they have. http://digitalunite.com/spring-online/events/ipad-surfing-cinema

Spring Online: Northern Ireland

As part of Digital Unite’s Spring Online week, two new six week free fun
and informal computer courses will be starting on Tuesday in the Rowan Tree
Centre, Pomeroy at 12.30pm and in Clogher Valley Community Centre, Augher at
8pm as part of the BT Connected Communities initiative, in partnership with the
UK charity Citizens Online Get IT Together campaign. BT and Community Digital Champion volunteers
will also be helping two classes in Glasgowbury, Draperstown improve their
computer and internet skills from 7 – 9.15pm – maybe they could chat to each other for free
using skype- realising yet another benefit to being connected online. Meanwhile older people in Maghery Community
Hall will be springing online with help from members of the local youth group
showing them how to use ipads and download useful apps as part of an
intergenerational project.

An awareness raising session showing the benefits of being online will
take place at an older people’s networking event, run by O4O, in the Crieve
Centre, Stewartstown on Wednesday at 11am.

On Thursday a Drop In IT Session for people
looking help with their computers eg downloading photos, sending emails etc
will take place in Ederney Town Hall, Fermanagh at 11am along with a cuppa and
a chat. Whereas in the evening,
the over 50’s will have the opportunity to get online at a beginners IT course
in Cavanaleck Leaf Centre, Enniskillen. Meanwhile
in Tyrone, a new computer confidence
course targeting older men will be starting at 6pm in the Rowan Tree Centre, Pomeroy, with a Drop In
session afterwards at 7.30pm.

Finally, on Friday, older people will be getting online in Crescent Community & Cultural Centre, Caw, with the help of
Supporting Communities NI and our own digital Champion volunteers. Participants include both this year’s and
last year’s Pensioner of the Year. Down
the road in the BEAM Social Enterprise Centre, Maydown, the next group of North
West graduates will be starting their GAP employability programme, searching
for jobs online, uploading CV’s and application forms and carrying out online
exams to gain additional qualifications, finding placements and hopefully
gaining employment. Statistics to date are
very promising.

On
28 March 2013 local learners gathered for a 'Celebration of Learning and
Perseverance'. The event was organised by a group started in October 2012 as a
result of a partnership between Get IT Together and Helmsdale and District
Community Association, with ten learners in total have completed thirty weeks of
training in use of the Internet and in basic computing skills. The Community
Association also sourced a number of recycled laptops through the ReBoot scheme
in Forres- which will remain in the community centre for community use: a real
asset.

to work extremely hard during her time in Helmsdale- not least when one of her
learners arrived in class with a new computer running Windows 8- an operating system

The benefits system is changing. From April 2013 a new Universal Credit will be introduced to replace many current benefits, including Housing Benefit and Job Seeker’s Allowance. The Government wants 80% of applications for Universal Credit to be online by 2017.

Francis Maud, Minister for the Cabinet Office said,
“Central Government where possible must become a Digital Organisation. These days the best service organisations deliver everything online that can be delivered online. This cuts their costs dramatically and allows access to information and services at times and in ways convenient to the users rather than the providers”

The Department for Work and Pensions though has warned that welfare reform could falter without greater digital inclusion. Mike Shakespeare, from DWP, told a seminar organised by digital skills body, Digital Unite and others, that digital inclusion work is vital for the government’s flagship welfare reform policy. He said:

“No matter what other problems we encounter with this benefit, and I think we will encounter one or two, if we can’t get people online it will fall at the first hurdle.”
Helen Milner, chief executive of UK online centres reports that 16 million UK adults are not frequent and competent internet users with 51% of those being over 65. She went on to state that of the 12 million people affected by Universal Credit its estimated that 6 million people don’t have the skill level to currently interact unaided.

The role for organisations like Get IT Together Bristol is to do something to help those 6 million people.

Our learners sign up for a course in Bristol for a variety of reasons… for communicating with friends and family, pursuing hobbies, from curiosity in what’s going on or of what they might be missing, for playing games or writing letters, for emailing the council and so on.

54% of households without internet access stated that motivation was the main reason they haven’t got connected (they felt they didn’t need a connection) after the reasons of skills and equipment.
So far none of our learners have come with the specific reason of wanting to learn how to access benefits online but I foresee a change in this.

Citizens Online’s aim through digital inclusion is to improve lives. Perhaps we will see some new learners sign up to our courses due to a need rather than a want. I hope that the knowledge and confidence a learner could gain accessing their benefits online will enable them to reap the other extensive benefits being online can have on someone’s life.

The Get IT Together Bristol Project was set up to tackle the issues of digital exclusion and currently runs 9 computer clubs a week in Bristol. We offer free courses to anybody over the age of 55 and people with disability and their carers. There are many other providers in Bristol that run courses and training for all sectors of the population.

You can sign up for one of our courses by phoning me on 07785 462 568 or emailing kerry.bradshaw@citizensonline.org.uk you can also find our course locations, information about the computer reuse scheme and a list of other providers in Bristol on our website.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08159875272721828646noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-964563644663595361.post-38160452929112534912013-03-09T02:37:00.002-08:002013-03-09T02:37:27.845-08:00Measuring employability

Citizens Online run digital inclusion projects – Get IT
Together across the UK. We help individuals, particularly older and disabled
people get started with the Internet and we have some robust measures in place
to understand the journey learners go on in becoming regular Internet users.

Our latest project in Rhondda Cynon Taf (RCT) has a slightly
different focus. Its aims are still to help disadvantaged people access the
Internet, but this time using young volunteers who will gain employability
skills by volunteering with the project. Our existing measures can record the
progress of the learners, but how do we capture the benefits gained by the
young volunteers?

I’ve been looking at a whole range of measures on
employability to see which ones we can use to demonstrate the outcomes of our
project. It’s really difficult to assess this area. There’s not definition of “employable”
and skills sets vary depending on the type of employment you’re looking for.
Some schemes measures steps on the way to employment, but these are not
consistently defined and can seem slightly artificial.

Our RCT project co-ordinator Ryan is a trained Rickter Scale assessor. A system that
uses boards and cards with the user to show the distance travelled during a
project. The system costs around £100 and I really liked the idea of a scale of
progress. But for me, as a mathematician is too focused on the soft skills that
volunteers would gain. How am I to cost the value to society from areas like
happiness and relationships? I also think that the system isn’t digital enough.
For a digital inclusion charity, we need an online measure to enable the
volunteers to demonstrate their IT skills from the start.

The next system I reviewed was Outcome Stars. Recommended
by a Close Partner I had high hopes this would cover the areas we needed. I
really liked the questions that were asked and the focus on different areas of
working life. It’s an online system so ticks another box for me. However, the
system is costly and for a charity like ours, that’s an important feature.

We already have a questionnaire based assessment process and
a longitudinal study that produce extremely robust, interesting data for us.
We’re trying different ways of presenting the data, and I’d like to develop a
more interactive tool to query the dataset. However, the underlying data is
brilliant and the data we get from phoning learners up after their finished the
training provides us with a unique insight into what happens next. I want to use the strengths of the existing
system for our young volunteers. That way, if they found employment or further
training in the future, we would be able to find out.

I designed two questionnaires; An entry questionnaire for
volunteers starting with the project, and an exit questionnaire for those
who’ve completed some volunteering with us. How much volunteering they need to
do is still to be decided! We’ll be making them available online so volunteers
can immediately demonstrate their Internet capabilities.

The entry form captures demographic information (always needed),
their current Internet access, use of devices, and use of the Internet for
job-seeking. It then assesses their confidence in a number of key areas (softer
skills), their current employment status and what they’d like to get from
volunteering. The exit form asks for similar information to measure their
progress against these key measures. We’re then planning a phone call 3 or 6
months down the line to see what they’ve done since volunteering. Again, we’d
like to show their progress from starting with Get IT Together to the latest
progress report. We’ve tried to combine both quantitative and qualitative data
to get a comprehensive picture of the benefits our programme offers to young
volunteers. This will enable us to demonstrate the value of our project to
funders and most importantly ensure that the ideas we think will work, actually
do.

If you’ve got any
ideas for measuring employability or have found a system that works for you,
please share it with us. We’re always looking for new ways to measure outcomes
(rather than simply measuring outputs).

It usually takes absolutely ages to get anything going with an educational establishment. Two weeks ago Get Caerphilly Online had a request for volunteer placements for students at Ystrad Mynach College. I went to visit Rachel Price, the member of staff in question last Thursday and this Thursday I am giving a presentation to over 30 students to prepare them to open up a Digital Friday drop-in session at Ystrad Mynach library after Easter. This will be our sixth library to be hosting Digital Fridays currently. The only problem is that the students are only required to do a total of 15 hours volunteering for their course and are likely to disappear during the holidays. Of course, we will get a new batch in September, but it does mean that I now need another group of volunteers who will cover the sessions during the summer vacation. With luck I may be able to mobilise some volunteers from BT, my main funders, who support employee volunteering.

More schools work this week. Back to Lewis School to lead a session on using search engines; visiting Blackwood Comprehensive's Intergen Club launch and planning a historypin event during Adult Learners Week at Risca Comprehensive. Fortunately, volunteer recruitment is going well at the moment - but I always seem to need more!
